Silent columns and benches rise
Around the deserted oval
Echoing the ancient cheers and screams.
Death once stalked this coliseum
Evil lurked in the arched doorways
Silent columns and benches rise
Testimony to time’s passage
The cheering men and women are dust
Around the deserted oval
Listen to the whispering breeze
Telling of men who fought and died
Echoing ancient cheers and screams
This is my entry for Jingle’s Thursday Poetry Rally

/ September 9, 2010A chill went up and down my spine, and I got an eerie feeling, as if I was standing right in the center of the arena, with a lion staring at me…while I was reading this poem, power of the words well written to stir the imagination.

/ September 9, 2010oh my god!! This is amazing, Liz!! The picture you have painted is dark and sordid! But very real too!!
You know what! Just last night, I read a poem by a friend (Chris G.)… it was on the same lines as yours! It’s quite amazing how both of you have written poems on the same subject! And he too is in the Thursday Rally! :) Here is the link to his poem, for you: http://cianphelan.wordpress.com/2010/09/08/deception/
You will know what I mean…
Happy Thursday, Liz!!
Morganna
/ September 9, 2010Thanks, Kavita. His poem is really good too. Actually, a writing prompt blog I read (daily-writing.blogspot.com) had the prompt of ‘gladiator’ last week. I didn’t respond to the prompt there, but came up with this poem for the rally later. Did Chris G. read the same prompt? :)

/ September 10, 2010My ears are burning. I’m being talked about, aren’t I? :P
It all comes back to Rome I suppose…nice to see the connection between us, though, no Morganna, I didn’t bring mine up from a prompt. Mine was spawned by dealing with politicians too often for my own good. Glad to see happy coincidence brought us together!

/ September 10, 2010Stunning poem, Lizbeth…I can feel the place! Despite its dark side, I rate ‘Gladiator’ as one of the best movies I’ve seen, brought immediately to mind by your amazing writing!

/ September 10, 2010Great poem; the word choices remind me a little of Plath’s style– and I LOVE her! Keep up the great work :)
P.s. Thanks for commenting on my poem x

/ September 10, 2010Fabulous! I visited the colloseum in Rome and the amphitheatre in Pompeii a couple of years back, and those images came flooding back. Thank you.

/ September 10, 2010Very strong image presented by these words. You do a really good job of painting a picture with your language.

/ September 10, 2010Powerful, potent image, like a painting drawn with words. Somewhat dark, but the tone is engaging, and the words set my imagination into overdrive. Wonderfully writ, Morganna!
And thanks for swinging by my blog–happy rally to you.

/ September 10, 2010Something about the calm flow of the form and the violence of the content begin to bounce off each other. Works well, I enjoyed this. – bill

/ September 11, 2010I loved the repetition in your poem; always pulling us back in time, and then to the present. “The cheering men and women are dust” was especially powerful.
