May Goals: Check-In and New Goals for June

The monthly check-in is very, very late this month. I apologize — it seems to be indicative of how May went for me — very little done in the Etsy shop or with this blog — personal and family time took priority, as well as me taking on a permanent role in my quarter-time job — this all means less time for blogging & business. I expect to have less time overall throughout the summer, so don’t be surprised if you don’t see me around much. I do want to get back to listing every day in my shop, though. August is when the Etsy shop picks up for me, and I want to be prepared.

First up, the personal goals.

  1. Write more. Post every day to this blog. Work more on my novel — at least a paragraph a day, preferably 500 words a day. Get out of the no-poetry-writing slump I’ve been in.
I missed 9 days of blogging in May and very little other writing done.
  2. Start writing notes and letters to friends and family again.
    No notes written.
  3. Keep the house clean. Start following a housekeeping/cleaning schedule again.
The house got even cleaner in May, and is now the best it has been in years.

Next up, business resolutions for the year.

  1. Get brochures about my tassels and (maybe) actual tassels into at least one local bridal gown store and at least one home decor store.
Improved wedding brochure photos and continue to tweak the brochure.
  2. Take new tassels for each season/holiday to the local gallery where my tassels are on consignment.
This still needs to be done: Summer tassels need to be made and go to the gallery.
  3. List a new tassel or item every day in my Etsy store.
I did not list every day in my Etsy store in May.
  4. List a new item in my Zibbet store.
    Didn’t manage this one.
  5. Make at least one Etsy sale per month.
Yes! I had 2 Etsy sales in May.
  6. Make at least 40 Etsy sales this year.
    11 down, 29 to go.
  7. Have a home show.
Planning is not progressing. Must work on that.
  8. Teach a class on beading tassels.
The class is scheduled for June 23 at 2 pm at Pandora’s Beads — if you are local and would like to attend, I’d love to see you there. Contact me if you have questions.

How did these May goals go?

  1. List enough items in the Zibbet store to bring me up to 1 page of products per section. These are the required numbers:
    Stationery: 2 items
    Paper mache: 11 items
    Art collages: 11 items
    Sculpture: 9 items
    Jewelry: 11 items
Didn’t manage to list a single item in the Zibbet store.  :(
  2. Retake photos & finish wedding store brochure.
Retook photos — brochure is much closer to being done.
  3. Take wedding store brochure to at least one store.
Nope. But I made a list of stores to take it to.
  4. Start baby shower brochure. Retake photos if necessary.
Nope. I started a list of stores to take it to.
  5. Plan home show.
Nope. I think it will have to be a fall show.
  6. Send postcards for home show.
    Nope.
  7. Plan tassel beading class  – follow up with venues, start publicizing.
    Yes!
  8. Finish and post to this blog the Tassel Collections pages.
I will work on this more.
  9. List at least one item in Zibbet store.
    Nope!
  10. Make at least one item for the Zibbet store.
    Nope!
  11. Finish and list Easter tassels.
Easter tassels finished, need to be listed.
  12. Make beaded purple butterfly tassel.
    Beads picked out.
  13. Make fun summer tassels.
    Thread cut.
  14. Start Halloween/fall tassels.
    Nope!
  15. Read up on SEO and photos for the Etsy shop. Make changes as necessary to update.
Started updates — need to complete.

June Goals

  1. Finish summer tassels.
  2. Make welcome page for this blog.
  3. Start fall tassels.
  4. Make and list an item in the Zibbet store.
  5. Teach beading class.
  6. Start fall tassels.
  7. Finish wedding brochure.
  8. Finish Tassel Collections pages.

I see my goals evolving through the year — right now I am more focused on my family and other things going on in my life, but I know that I will come back to my store as business picks up and summer ends.

April Goals: Check-In and New Goals for May

Time for the monthly goal check-in. How is your year going? Are you fulfilling your New Year’s resolutions?

First up, the personal goals.

  1. Write more. Post every day to this blog. Work more on my novel — at least a paragraph a day, preferably 500 words a day. Get out of the no-poetry-writing slump I’ve been in.
I only missed 4 days of blogging this month. I wrote in my novel twice, and wrote a poem. I think I have another poem brewing, if I can just sit down and work on it.
  2. Start writing notes and letters to friends and family again.
    No notes written.
  3. Keep the house clean. Start following a housekeeping/cleaning schedule again.
Things are definitely improving. I have more energy, and that definitely helps. Oddly, the more time I spend outside, the more energy I have for tackling the indoor cleaning, too.

For April, both writing and house cleaning improved, unlike in March. I guess I just have to be patient — it all gets done eventually.

Next up, business resolutions for the year.

  1. Get brochures about my tassels and (maybe) actual tassels into at least one local bridal gown store and at least one home decor store.
Finished wedding brochure and realized that photos that look great on Etsy do not look great in print. Must retake all photos for the brochure.
  2. Take new tassels for each season/holiday to the local gallery where my tassels are on consignment.
Summer tassels need to be made and go to the gallery.
  3. List a new tassel or item every day in my Etsy store.
I noticed my listing rate suffers towards the end of each month. I need to work on that, but I’m not sure I have the time to actually list every day. But the light’s been bad for photos lately, so hopefully I’ll be able to take photos more often as summer approaches.
  4. List a new item in my Zibbet store.
Done. Listed a wire ojo pendant. (link)
  5. Make at least one Etsy sale per month.
Yes! I had 2 Etsy sales in April.
  6. Make at least 40 Etsy sales this year.
    9 down, 31 to go.
  7. Have a home show.
Planning is not progressing. Must work on that.
  8. Teach a class on beading tassels.
Priced venues. Waiting to hear back.

I think I’m not finishing goals as fast as I hoped. But progress is being made.

How did I do on my April goals?

  1. Finish wedding store brochure.
I finished the wedding brochure and realized that I need to redo the photos — Etsy photos won’t do. So I am waiting to have good light & time to take photos in the same moment.
  2. Take wedding store brochure to at least one store.
    Nope.
  3. Start baby shower brochure.
Nope. Thinking I need to redo these photos, too.
  4. Plan home show.
    Nope.
  5. Send postcards for home show.
    Nope
  6. Plan tassel beading class.
Started — got a price quote on a location. Need to follow up with venues.
  7. Finish and post to this blog the Tassel Collections pages.
    Didn’t even start.
  8. List at least one item in Zibbet store.
    Done.
  9. Make at least one item for the Zibbet store.
    Done.
  10. Finish and list Easter tassels.
    In progress.
  11. Make beaded purple butterfly tassel.
    Nope.
  12. Make fun summer tassels.
    New beads purchased.
  13. Start planning Halloween/fall tassels.
    Beads purchased.
  14. Do state sales taxes, check profit/loss for 1st quarter.
    Done.

May Goals

  1. List enough items in the Zibbet store to bring me up to 1 page of products per section. These are the required numbers:
    Stationery: 2 items
    Paper mache: 11 items
    Art collages: 11 items
    Sculpture: 9 items
    Jewelry: 11 items
  2. Retake photos & finish wedding store brochure.
  3. Take wedding store brochure to at least one store.
  4. Start baby shower brochure. Retake photos if necessary.
  5. Plan home show.
  6. Send postcards for home show.
  7. Plan tassel beading class  – follow up with venues, start publicizing.
  8. Finish and post to this blog the Tassel Collections pages.
  9. List at least one item in Zibbet store.
  10. Make at least one item for the Zibbet store.
  11. Finish and list Easter tassels.
  12. Make beaded purple butterfly tassel.
  13. Make fun summer tassels.
  14. Start Halloween/fall tassels.
  15. Read up on SEO and photos for the Etsy shop. Make changes as necessary to update.

March Goals: Check-In and New Goals for April

The first day of April is here. No joking, how did I do for my goals in March?

First up, the personal goals.

  1. Write more. Post every day to this blog. Work more on my novel — at least a paragraph a day, preferably 500 words a day. Get out of the no-poetry-writing slump I’ve been in.
I posted almost every day to this blog — I only missed 6 days, one less than I missed in January and February. But all other writing suffered.
  2. Start writing notes and letters to friends and family again.
    No notes written.
  3. Keep the house clean. Start following a housekeeping/cleaning schedule again.
The house is cleaner. I am getting back on track with the schedule.

This month, writing goals suffered (except the blog) and the house is cleaner. Perhaps there is a connection.

Next up, business resolutions for the year.

  1. Get brochures about my tassels and (maybe) actual tassels into at least one local bridal gown store and at least one home decor store.
A wedding brochure is almost done.
  2. Take new tassels for each season/holiday to the local gallery where my tassels are on consignment.
I need to check in with the gallery.
  3. List a new tassel or item every day in my Etsy store.
I didn’t list much for the first half of March. But I have listed every day for a while now, and have more tassels to list. But I am starting to run out of new items — I need to start work on summer tassels.
  4. List a new item weekly in my Zibbet store.
Still a fail. But I have new items actually ready to list there — I guess I should have been more incremental in my goals. Let’s change the goal for April — list one new item in my Zibbet store.
  5. Make at least one Etsy sale per month.
Yes! I had 2 Etsy sales in March.
  6. Make at least 40 Etsy sales this year.
    7 down, 33 to go.
  7. Have a home show.
Planning is not progressing. Must work on that.
  8. Teach a class on beading tassels.
No plans yet. Good thing I’m looking back at my goals. Maybe I’ll actually remember to start planning this.

I think I’m not finishing goals as fast as I hoped. But progress is being made.

How did I do on my March goals?

  1. Finish brochures for wedding & baby stores.
    Wedding brochure is almost done.
  2. Set location & date for home show.
    Nope.
  3. Send postcards about home show.
    Obviously not.
  4. Create more engraved copper medallions.
    Nope.
  5. Create 2 art tassels for the art show in May.
Yes, and they are beautiful. See them here: Koi Pond Beaded Tassel and Sunrise Tassel.
  6. Finish new tassel lines.
    Yes.
  7. Plan tassel beading class.
    Nope.
  8. Create new items for Zibbet store & list.
I have a couple items photographed but not listed.
  9. Finish website update.
    Yes!
  10. Roll out new logo across the Internet.
    Yes!
  11. Apply to be a guest blogger on a blog of someone I don’t know (this is going to be an ongoing monthly goal as I strive to write more — I already have a couple places to guest blog, I want to reach out more)
    Yes!

Four goals completed, and two in progress, leaving five uncompleted. Not bad.

April Goals

  1. Finish wedding store brochure.
  2. Take wedding store brochure to at least one store.
  3. Start baby shower brochure.
  4. Plan home show.
  5. Send postcards for home show.
  6. Plan tassel beading class.
  7. Finish and post to this blog the Tassel Collections pages.
  8. List at least one item in Zibbet store.
  9. Make at least one item for the Zibbet store.
  10. Finish and list Easter tassels.
  11. Make beaded purple butterfly tassel.
  12. Make fun summer tassels.
  13. Start planning Halloween/fall tassels.
  14. Do state sales taxes, check profit/loss for 1st quarter.

Wish me luck!

February Goals: How did I do? Plus New Business & Blogging Goals for March

It’s not the first day of March, but it’s close :), so it’s time to look back at the goals I set for February. I did okay in January. How did I do for February?

First up, the personal goals.

  1. Write more. Post every day to this blog. Work more on my novel — at least a paragraph a day, preferably 500 words a day. Get out of the no-poetry-writing slump I’ve been in.
Check, but not as good as January. I’ve been writing something in my journal and posting to Daily Writing Practice most every weekdays, but I’ve been missing a few days here and there. I have posted to this blog all but 7 days this month, which sounds good but is one more day without publishing than in January. Some poetry has been written. No work was done on the novel. :(
  2. Start writing notes and letters to friends and family again.
A note was written. I must mail it. This is an improvement.
  3. Keep the house clean. Start following a housekeeping/cleaning schedule again.
We’re not talking about this one. I will try harder.

This month I mostly kept the writing goals, and improved with the writing notes goal. Again, let’s ignore the house. You know I didn’t keep that one.

Next up, business resolutions for the year.

  1. Get brochures about my tassels and (maybe) actual tassels into at least one local bridal gown store and at least one home decor store.
Brochures were actually begun. Progress was made.
  2. Take new tassels for each season/holiday to the local gallery where my tassels are on consignment.
Check. I need to find out what she wants to do about spring tassels.
  3. List a new tassel or item every day in my Etsy store.
I haven’t listed in a while on Etsy. I have a huge number of ribbon rose tassels I need to finish, and I’m bogged down in them. I need to photograph the two tassels I have done and list them.
  4. List a new item weekly in my Zibbet store.
Fail. But I actually have ideas for new products there. This is an improvement.
  5. Make at least one Etsy sale per month.
Yes! I had 3 Etsy sales in February. One was my first Etsy trade ever, so that was exciting.
  6. Make at least 40 Etsy sales this year.
    5 down, 35 to go.
  7. Have a home show.
Planning is not progressing. Must work on that.
  8. Teach a class on beading tassels.
No plans yet. Good thing I’m looking back at my goals. Maybe I’ll actually remember to start planning this.

Again, half the goals are on track, half are not. I need to work on this.

How did I do on my February goals?

  1. Start new lines of wedding tassels, baby shower tassels, and spring flower tassels.
    Check.
  2. Set date for home show (ideally in March).
    Fail.
  3. If home show is in March, send out postcards.
    N/A (See #2)
  4. Start new line of engraved copper medallions.
    Check.
  5. Start planning for tassel beading class.
    Fail. Must do in March.
  6. Create brochures.
    Progress was made.
  7. Renew Zibbet items. Add one item per week to Zibbet store.
Items renewed. More items not added.
  8. Create a free gift for people who sign up for my newsletter.
Check. Sign up and receive a tip sheet for taking photos in low light conditions.

Well, it seems like I am good at getting about half my goals done. :)

In addition to the goals listed here, I spent time updating this website and creating a new logo.

New Business Goals for March

  1. Finish brochures for wedding & baby stores.
  2. Set location & date for home show.
  3. Send postcards about home show.
  4. Create more engraved copper medallions.
  5. Create 2 art tassels for the art show in May.
  6. Finish new tassel lines.
  7. Plan tassel beading class.
  8. Create new items for Zibbet store & list.
  9. Finish website update.
  10. Roll out new logo across the Internet.
  11. Apply to be a guest blogger on a blog of someone I don’t know (this is going to be an ongoing monthly goal as I strive to write more — I already have a couple places to guest blog, I want to reach out more)

I feel quite ambitious, bringing the March goals up to 11 goals, when I haven’t been completing all 8 goals. I’ll check back in April and let you know how it went.

Looking Back: Completing New Year’s Resolutions

Well, it’s the first day of February, so I thought I’d take a look back at the goals I set for this month and this year at the beginning of January, and see how I did.

First up, the personal goals.

  1. Write more. Post every day to this blog. Work more on my novel — at least a paragraph a day, preferably 500 words a day. Get out of the no-poetry-writing slump I’ve been in.
Check. I’ve been writing something in my journal and posting to Daily Writing Practice every weekday. I have posted to this blog all but 6 days this month (and one of those was due to the SOPA strike). Some poetry has been written. Not so good on the novel-writing front, though. Must work harder on that.
  2. Start writing notes and letters to friends and family again. I used to write letters to my friends and family on a semi-regular basis. I’d like to do that again.
Fail. Not one note has been written this month. Try again this month.
  3. Keep the house clean. Start following a housekeeping/cleaning schedule again.
Debatable. The house is cleaner, but I’m not following the cleaning schedule. Try harder this month.

So it looks like I kept my writing goals and resolutions but not the other 2. I’m keeping the same goals for February, so we’ll see how that goes.

Next up, business resolutions for the year.

  1. Get brochures about my tassels and (maybe) actual tassels into at least one local bridal gown store and at least one home decor store.
Nope. I need to work my courage up for that one. Also, I stalled out on making the brochures — much more daunting than I anticipated (more on that in a moment).
  2. Take new tassels for each season/holiday to the local gallery where my tassels are on consignment.
Check. Valentine’s tassels are in the gallery, and I have a few more to take in.
  3. List a new tassel or item every day in my Etsy store.
Check. Momentum is faltering, however, as I wind down on Valentine’s tassels and start thinking about spring tassels.
  4. List a new item weekly in my Zibbet store.
Fail. In fact, the entire set of listings in the Zibbet store expired and I did nothing about it. Uh oh.
  5. Make at least one Etsy sale per month.
Yes! I made 2 Etsy sales in January, and 1 already for February.
  6. Make at least 40 Etsy sales this year.
    So far, so good.
  7. Have a home show.
    Starting to plan.
  8. Teach a class on beading tassels.
No plans yet. Good thing I’m looking back at my goals. Maybe I’ll actually remember to start planning this.

Not too bad. Half the goals are on track for the year. I better get to work on the other half.

Lastly, specific goals for January.

  1. Create brochures.
I set up a project in PrintShop. Does that count? :) Seriously, it seemed really daunting (the only document layout software I have is PrintShop, and the standard brochure template doesn’t have a tri-fold brochure) and I got bogged down. Does anyone have suggestions for a software program for making brochures easily?
  2. Stock up on tassel-making supplies.
Check. I still need a few things, but I’m pretty much set for a while.
  3. Create Valentine’s tassels, enough for the Etsy store and the local gallery.
Check. Just a couple more and I’m done.
  4. Finish previous line of wedding tassels.
    Check.
  5. Start new lines of wedding tassels, baby shower tassels, and spring flower tassels.
    February.
  6. Start new line of engraved copper medallions.
    February.

Well, again, half got done, half didn’t. I don’t think that’s too bad, really.

And this post wouldn’t be complete without setting new goals for February.

February Goals

  1. Start new lines of wedding tassels, baby shower tassels, and spring flower tassels.
  2. Set date for home show (ideally in March).
  3. If home show is in March, send out postcards.
  4. Start new line of engraved copper medallions.
  5. Start planning for tassel beading class.
  6. Create brochures.
  7. Renew Zibbet items. Add one item per week to Zibbet store.
  8. Create a free gift for people who sign up for my newsletter.

Wish me luck! I’ll report back at the beginning of March.

Happy New Year!

High on the Happy Side

Image via Wikipedia

I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable New Year! I have been enjoying cleaning my house and getting all the clutter cleared up to start 2012 with a nice neat house. I normally don’t make New Year’s Resolutions, but I thought I would make a few this year, both personal and for my business, and share them with you.

Personal

  1. Write more. Post every day to this blog. Work more on my novel — at least a paragraph a day, preferably 500 words a day. Get out of the no-poetry-writing slump I’ve been in.
  2. Start writing notes and letters to friends and family again. I used to write letters to my friends and family on a semi-regular basis. I’d like to do that again.
  3. Keep the house clean. Start following a housekeeping/cleaning schedule again.

I think that’s enough resolutions on the personal side. :)

Business

  1. Get brochures about my tassels and (maybe) actual tassels into at least one local bridal gown store and at least one home decor store.
  2. Take new tassels for each season/holiday to the local gallery where my tassels are on consignment.
  3. List a new tassel or item every day in my Etsy store.
  4. List a new item weekly in my Zibbet store.
  5. Make at least one Etsy sale per month.
  6. Make at least 40 Etsy sales this year.
  7. Have a home show.
  8. Teach a class on beading tassels.

And, specific goals for January:

  1. Create brochures.
  2. Stock up on tassel-making supplies.
  3. Create Valentine’s tassels, enough for the Etsy store and the local gallery.
  4. Finish previous line of wedding tassels.
  5. Start new lines of wedding tassels, baby shower tassels, and spring flower tassels.
  6. Start new line of engraved copper medallions.

That’s it for me. What are your goals and resolutions for the New Year? Please share in the comments.
